Novel Quizzes in QAR Format

Reading Strategies No Comments »

After a couple weeks of reading our novels, we took our first quizzes.  As mentioned before, I had each student complete a DRA to place him or her into reading groups based on approximate reading levels.  The first few weeks with a new novel are very critical.  Students need to activate their prior knowledge about their books, make connections with the main characters, and understand the basic story elements.  These components need to be organized in students’ minds in order to make sense of the text and predict what will happen to its characters.

To ensure the students’ comprehension early in a chapter book, I have students complete the first few READ Bingo Activities (as mentioned in the last blog entry), conference with me in their small reading groups, and complete a quiz for the first three chapters of their novel.  Below are links to each book’s challenging vocabulary and comprehension questions for chapters one through three.  I based these quizzes on the QAR model, or question-answer relationship.  The QAR model uses questions with answers from novels that are “right there,” “think & search,” “author & you,” or “on your own” questions.
